Greetings friends and other residents interested in Back Creek
This is the 14th edition of BACKCREEK BRIEFINGS. The 2004 year promises to be a very busy year with FOBC being involved in potentially 3 major re-vegetation projects along the creek.
Progress made is as follows:
Membership subscription: Membership subscriptions for 2004 are now due. If you would like to become a member and or make a donation, contact our treasurer Bob Strickland on 9830 0749 or print off a membership form from our website and send us your subscription.
Working Bees: Our first working bee for 2004 will be on Sunday March 7th 2003 "Clean Up Australia" day. This is an opportunity to once again clean up the debris washed down by rain over the past few months. Although the volume of rubbish collected is likely to be less than previous years we will still collect enough to fill a dozen or more bags, Typical of the type of rubbish collected includes plastic drink containers, chip wrapping, supermarket bags and cigarette butts.
If you want to help out, come down to the Cornell Street end Sunday Morning from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm. Just bring a good pair of gloves and shoes, drinks and refreshments will be provided. Other working bees will generally occur around the third Sunday of each month. All our community events will be based at the Cornell Street end of the creek.

Tadpoles: We have now put in over 100 "Pobble Bonk'' tadpoles into the creek pond near Riversdale Road. These are native frogs to this region and will add to the faunal diversity that currently includes the Southern Brown Tree Frog. To assist their survival we have also replanted duck weed and slender knot weed along the bank as plant habitats. We hope to hear them this Spring.
Annual General Meeting: On Sunday 28 March at 4.00pm, FOBC will hold its 4th Annual General Meeting of members. The meeting will be held at 3 Nicholsdale Road Camberwell.
The Guest Speaker will include a representatives from City of Boroondara and Melbourne Water outlining their respective plans for the Back creek over the next 12 months.
Nominations for the election of Office bearers and committee positions can be made by completing the form below and sending to our Secretary Chris Walta 29A Cornell Street Camberwell. 3124
Grant applications: FOBC has successfully gained a grant worth over $9000 from the Federal Government Envirofund. This money will be used to re-vegetate the creek along the eastern side near the Cornell Street entrance opposite the pathway. Other projects that we will be involved in over the next 12 months include:
Re-vegetation along the Quinton Road side of the Creek using $6000 Melbourne Water grant
Planting along the western creek embankment next to the new section of pathway using $1500 City of Boroondara grant
Each of these projects will pose some significant challenges for the group. Local resident assistance and friends will be greatly appreciated. If you know of any other community groups interested in helping let us know.
Melbourne Water:
Over the past 3 months 2 willows have fallen into the creek along Quinton Rd. Melbourne Water will be removing them over the next couple of weeks.
